"In five minutes," Walter said, "I'm going to use this squeegee to open a portal to New Forest Academy. We're going to move in and apprehend Director Carlos Garcia."

Spencer's surprised look mirrored Daisy's. Penny looked excited and Alan simply nodded.

"Tonight we finish what we almost did last November," Alan said. "We're taking the warlock's hammer and nail."

The stakes have never been higher, and you've never seen squeegees do this before! It is a wild and slightly unsanitary ride as Spencer, Daisy, and the Rebel Janitors find themselves chased by Mr. Clean's new and terrifying half-breed Toxites—the Sweepers. Time is short. With the fabled Manualis Custodem in hand, Spencer must figure out how to summon the Founding Witches if they ever hope to mop up and save education.

An audiobook narrated by the author? Tyler Whitesides can not only write, but he has more than one voice!  Mr. Garcia with rolling “r’s” and the middle school bully Dez are just two of the characters portrayed in Janitors #4. My children adore this series. We listened to it to and from school and once again were not disappointed in the action packed, middle grade magic. In installment #4 Spencer and his crew and fighting a hybrid race of “toxites” and the evil Mr. Clean. Armed with glop, brooms and squeegees the war is on!

If you haven’t read the rest of the Janitors series, start with book one and then get to book four around Halloween time. The tone and music is perfect for a suspenseful read with witches and warlocks. Tyler Whitesides know how to reel in this family and I’m sure he will yours!

Excerpt

Chapter 1
“Pink is not stealthy.”

It was raining. And cold. The parking lot of Welcher Elementary School was a giant puddle, with light from the nearby streetlamps glinting white against the slick blacktop.

“April showers bring May flowers,” Alan Zumbro whispered, a poor attempt to lighten the mood.

Spencer scanned the empty parking lot, but there was still no sign of Walter’s janitorial van. He turned to Daisy, whose teeth were chattering so loudly it sounded like a machine gun.

“We should get somewhere out of the rain,” Spencer said. “We’ll be soaked and frozen by the time we get inside.”

Daisy’s shaking hand reached into a pouch on her janitorial belt. “I have this,” she said, withdrawing something and handing it to Spencer.

“You had an umbrella?” Spencer said. “Why didn’t you use it?”

“It’s pink,” answered Daisy, tugging at her sopping black beanie. “Walter said we should wear dark clothes so we could be stealthy.”

“Good point,” Spencer said. A hot pink umbrella against the dark wall of the school would be like a lighthouse to anyone watching. He handed the umbrella back. “Pink is not stealthy.

A new, illustrated picture book with an invaluable lesson for children. In his April 2013 general conference address, President Thomas S. Monson told the story about his time as a young boy spending the summer at his family's cabin in Vivian Park. He and his best friend, Danny, decided to clear a field so they could gather with their friends and have a campfire. The tall, stubborn weeds would not pull out easily. So Tommy had the idea of using one little match to burn the weeds. He knew he should not use matches without permission from his parents. But he ignored the prompting warning him of the danger and set the parched June grass ablaze. The consequence of his disobedience nearly endangered the entire forest and almost burned down neighboring cabins. Soon all the men and women at Vivian Park were dashing back and forth with wet burlap bags, beating at the flames in an attempt to extinguish them. After several hours, the last remaining embers were finally smothered. Danny and I were exhausted and humbled. We felt terrible about what had happened. If only I had acted differently in that one little second and never picked up even one little match. I learned several difficult but important lessons that day. Perhaps the biggest lesson was the need for obedience. Rules and laws are created to keep us safe. When we obey those rules, we can avoid the dangers that can come from something as small as one little match.

I read this book aloud to my children last night, only to find out they had already picked it off my bookshelf and read it on their own…drawn by the idea of a match no doubt! They quickly learned why playing with matches is a bad idea and that even a Prophet of the Lord was drawn to play with matches as a little boy. But more importantly they caught the message to listen to the warnings, the whisperings in your heart that try to stop us from making a choice with grave consequences.

Filled with beautiful, vivid and life like illustrations, One Little Match has a great moral message and a happy ending. Dan Burr crafted some beautiful masterpieces, escpeially with the faces on little Tommy and his friend Dan! Short, sweet, to the point…this a great family lesson tool.

I love this series! Cragbridge Hall is a great way to introduce your school aged children to historic events, futuristic time travel fantasy and valuable lessons about character.

In book two, The Avatar Battle, Abby and Derrick, brother and sister team are at it again. Trying to get through a very challenging curriculuum at an exclusive school for only the smartest of the smart, while battling Muns, evil mastermind who wants to change history. With scenes from the Civil War, the burning of the Hindenberg, and futuristic giraffe fights there is plenty of action packed adventure. Chad’s characters with a sense of humor are sure to keep both children and adults turning pages.

I enjoy the little lessons for life that are written into the plot about competition, using power wisely, having character and integrity. There is mild violence, but nothing that keeps me from recommending the Cragbridge Hall series to my own little ones.( They were more excited than I was when it came in the mail, and I get pretty excited about books.) Thank you to Shadow Mountain for publishing family friendly, good quality books!

Author Interview

About the AuthorChadPic

Chad Morris’s debut novel, CRAGBRIDGE HALL, BOOK #1: THE INVENTOR’S SECRET, hit shelves March 5, 2013. This middle-grade romp through a futuristic secondary school is published by Shadow Mountain Press, the originating publishers of such middle grade contemporary favorites as Brandon Mull (FABLEHAVEN series and THE CANDY SHOP WARS), Obert Skye (LEVEN THUMPS series), and Tyler Whitesides (JANITORS series). Chad grew up wanting to become a professional basketball player or a rock star. (Inspired by Animal from The Muppets, he has been banging on drums since he was eight years old.) Neither of those plans quite panned out. After high school, he left the Rocky Mountains to live in Brazil for a few years then returned home to write and perform sketch comedy while going to college. He graduated from BYU with a couple of degrees and became a teacher and a curriculum writer.
