4 Stars
Book Overview: In this classic of children’s literature, beloved by generations of readers and listeners, the quiet poetry of the words and the gentle, lulling illustrations combine to make a perfect book for the end of the day. Full color.
Hones’ Review: Goodnight Moon is definitely a classic to share with every child.  The rhyming text is fun for children to try and complete the sentences.  It is also good for little ones to try and point out the objects which the bunny is wishing goodnight. My four-year old fills in the blanks when I pause while reading, and my almost two-year old loves to look for each item. They both enjoy looking for where the mouse is hiding throughout the book.
Recommended for ages 1-5.
About the Author:  Margaret Wise Brown wrote hundreds of books and stories during her life, but she is best known for Goodnight Moon and Runaway Bunny. Even though she died nearly 60 years ago, her books still sell very well.

Margaret loved animals. Most of her books have animals as characters in the story. She liked to write books that had a rhythm to them. Sometimes she would put a hard word into the story or poem. She thought this made children think harder when they are reading.

She wrote all the time. There are many scraps of paper where she quickly wrote down a story idea or a poem. She said she dreamed stories and then had to write them down in the morning before she forgot them.

She tried to write the way children wanted to hear a story, which often isn’t the same way an adult would tell a story. She also taught illustrators to draw the way a child saw things. One time she gave two puppies to someone who was going to draw a book with that kind of dog. The illustrator painted many pictures one day and then fell asleep. When he woke up, the papers he painted on were bare. The puppies had licked all the paint off the paper.

Margaret died after surgery for a bursting appendix while n France. She had many friends who still miss her. They say she was a creative genius who made a room come to life with her excitement. Margaret saw herself as something else – a writer of songs and nonsense.

Book Description: Samantha and Tracy have been best friends since kindergarten, but now that Tracy has gotten over her shyness and made new friends, Samantha is feeling left out. This is nothing compared to how she feels when a strange girl named Jessica tells Samantha that she’s actually an imaginary friend. Tracy has outgrown Samantha, and it’s time for Samantha to help another child who needs her. But will Samantha be able to move on and fulfill her duty as an imaginary friend?

Mary’s Review: Samantha is Tracy’s best friend.  They have been friends since kindergarten.  Now Tracy doesn’t seem to see Samantha anymore-doesn’t have as much time for her since she has made new friends.  Did she say or do something wrong?

Samantha soon learns that she is Tracy’s imaginary friend.  An imaginary friend that made her see the good in herself so that she could reach out to others and make friends.  Now that Tracy has learned confidence in herself and has the ability to make new friends, she no longer needs Samantha.
Now Samantha needs to learn how to let go of Tracy so that she can become an imaginary friend to another child who needs her.

This book is a good source for teaching children about change and growth, getting over shyness, learning confidence, and reaching out to others.

I recommend this book for ages 4-10.

Children’s Book Review – If You Give a Mouse a Cookie

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
IF YOU GIVE A MO– USE A COOKIE
by Laura Joffe Numeroff
Paperback, 32 pages
Published 1985
by Scholastic Inc.
ISBN 0590402331
Book Source: bought
4 Stars
Book Overview: “If you give a mouse a cookie, he’s going to ask for a glass of milk. When you give him the milk, he’ll probably ask you for a straw. . . “. So begins this delightful story about an energetic mouse and an accommodating little boy. Full-color illustrations.
Hones’ Review: This is a fantastic book to teach children the idea of sequencing and prediction.  I like that the end of the story circles back to the beginning.  My children enjoyed guessing what that silly mouse would want next.  They were delighted when they were right but almost more thrilled with their outlandish suggestions.  I loved that it brought such creativity to the surface.
Recommended for ages 3-8.
