Literacy and children, how can we encourage more kids to read?

As parents, we can do it by example—if parents enjoy reading, so will their kids. Take your kids to book stores and libraries, and let them choose what they want to read. Magazine subscriptions work, too. Even comic books can build a love of reading. Sharing what excites you in a book (like the weird fact you just read in Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader), having conversations about the books you’re reading, and just having books in the home all work.

About the Author

The life of Gordon “Uncle John” Javna, editor-in-chief and publisher of the Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader series, reads like one of his books. There’s a lot of fun, intriguing—often odd—information lurking around every corner. He went to art school, and then went on to become a musician, real-estate developer, writer, restaurateur, president of a pre-school, brew pub owner, and editor—not all at once, mind you, but he has been all of these things.

Eventually, though, he realized that because of his love of fascinating facts (and being a bathroom reader himself), he was naturally suited, perhaps even destined, to bring the joy of trivia to the world in a fun, informative way. The very first thing that grabbed my attention about this book is how beautiful and colorful the illustrations are. This is a high quality publication printed on thick paper with rich imagery. It will stand the test of time. I gave it to my 8 year old to read and she gave The Tuttle Twins Learn About the Law two thumbs up. She found the early reader book “interesting and educational.”

We later read it aloud as a family and she STILL remembered the facts, the premise, and many little details. That says a lot to me when, after a few weeks away from a book, my children still remember it.

As a mother and patriot, I loved the idea that right is right and wrong is wrong. The law is applied in every aspect of our lives and affects each and every one of us. Those in government can either further our freedom and help us succeed, or they can take our hard earned money and give it away. The concept of legal plunder is introduced in beginner terms and broken down for children as are Frederic Bastiat’s philosophy from his book “the Law.”

Connor Boyack has given us a wonderful teaching tool and roots to interest even the youngest mind about the rightful place of government. His main character Fred gardens, cans, and has a library overflowing with books ( my kind of role model.) We loved the Tuttle Twins and we are excited for book 2! Well done Connor.

Connor Boyack is president of Libertas Institute, a public policy think tank in Utah. He is the author of several books on politics and religion, along with hundreds of columns and articles championing individual liberty. His work has been featured on international, national, and local TV, radio, and other forms of media. A California native and Brigham Young University graduate, Connor currently resides in Lehi, Utah, with his wife and two children.
