About the Book:

Title: FARAWAY THINGS

Author: Dave Eggers, illustrated by Kelly Murphy

Pub. Date: June 8, 2021

Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Formats: Hardcover, eBook

Pages: 40

Find it: Goodreads, Amazon, B&N, TBD, Bookshop.org

From a bestselling author comes an evocative, classic-feeling adventure tale about a boy and his sword, and how giving away something precious leads to an even more important discovery.

Lucian’s father called them faraway things, those mysterious objects orphaned upon the windswept shore, their stories long lost in the shroud of ocean fog. Lucian’s discovery on the beach this particular day, though, is no ordinary faraway thing. It’s a cutlass: strong, shiny, and powerful. As its history comes to light, Lucian faces a choice: cling to the sword he loves or accept a gift that shines farther, wider, and deeper than he could have ever dreamed.

Stunningly illustrated with evocative art by Kelly Murphy and written by award-winning and bestselling writer Dave Eggers, here is a profound and resonant tale about the reward of letting go.

Praise for FARAWAY THINGS:
“Lyrical, descriptive language allows Lucian’s story to gently unfold… [a] beautiful story about adventure and honoring a father’s memory, this is a noteworthy addition to elementary school libraries.”―School Library Journal

* “An ingenious choice for a muted palette…[an] evocative picture book bildungsroman with equally atmospheric illustrations.”―Kirkus Reviews

* “Sweeping multimedia art by Murphy gives the galleon, its crew, and the ocean grandeur… Eggers tells his swashbuckling yarn with screenplay-like polish that feels just as expansive as Murphy’s art.”―Publishers Weekly

“Using wide pictures rendered in muted tones set alongside sparse text, the reader is given a window into the life of Lucian….[t]his story presents a short, yet important journey of loss, growth, and empathy.”―School Library Connection

REVIEW: What a beautiful book! When Faraway Things arrived in our mailbox from the publisher I was immediately drawn to the illustrations. With a seascape theme, and watercolor feel it hold and air of adventure. I loved how Lucian is coming into being a man, feeling important and honoring his father’s legacy. His faraway thing opens the door to a new mission. He also travels away from home without his mother’s approval! Simple, short and streamlined, this nautical picture book will inspire young ones dealing with loss and growing up.

Featuring a secret ocean code with a hidden message for YOU to decipher!

Even though twelve-year-old Alexis was born in Hawaii, she won’t surf or swim with her friends—not since the ocean and its hidden creatures swept her out to sea. Instead, she grabs her best detective hat and decodes her mom’s latest challenge

Alex’s mom works in counterintelligence and leaves codes, ciphers, and puzzles behind for Alex to solve, always with a “treasure” at the end. It’s a brilliant game between them, and Alex loves figuring out her mom’s puzzles—especially the tricky ones—but when an emergency at sea puts her mom in possible danger, solving the next one suddenly feels far more urgent.

Friends help as Alex races to decipher each clue before time runs out, but when the trail leads to grumpy old Uncle, his enormous dog Sarge, and a sea turtle unlike any other, the challenge changes into something bigger than any before. With storms on the horizon and lives on the line, Alex must face her fears to solve Mom’s challenge and save those she loves. With her ohana to help, she must be strong like the sea.
