Summary from Goodreads:Wilbur Walrus won’t go to the dentist even though one of his tusks hurts.

Hones’ Review: Initially my children and I thought this book was about losing a tooth.  But we were pleasantly surprised when we read about Wilbur Walrus and his sore tooth.  Wilbur needs to see the dentist but is afraid.  But he learns from his Grandpa the importance of seeing the dentist.  This is a great book to encourage children to visit the dentist and to take care of their teeth.

I recommend this book for ages 3-8.

About the Author: Jane Clarke was born in Kettering, England and thought she might be an explorer or an acrobat when she grew up.  She didn’t even like writing in school. Jane has been an archeologist, a history teacher, a library assistant and now is a full-time children’s writer – which is the best job yet!

4 stars

Product Overview from Amazon:  A classic story by Hans Christian Andersen in its original text presented with modern illustrations. The story of how a little bird endures abuse and misery as he was growing up not realizing he would mature into a beautiful swan. It’s a great tale about personal transformation for the better.

Mary’s Review:  This is a lovely Kindle edition of The Ugly Duckling with beautiful color illustrations.  The ugly duckling mistakenly born into the wrong family endures the persecution of everyone including his own brothers and sisters due to his ugly appearance.  He continues to look for a place and someone who will accept and love him for who he is and not for his looks.  This book helps to teach us well that a book should not be judged by it’s cover and beauty comes from within.

I recommend this ebook not only for children 4-8 but to all ages.  There is a lot we could all learn from this story.

About the Author: Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was born in Odense, Denmark to a poor family. He left home as a 14-year-old to seek his fortune at the theatre in Copenhagen. Andersen began writing plays and poetry before he left for Copenhagen, but it was not until 1835 that he published the first of the fairytales that would bring him international renown. Since then, his over 200 fairytales have enjoyed undiminished popularity, providing the basis for favorite American interpretations such as Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

Children’s Book Giveaway- The Kissing Hand

February 22, 2012 By Heather 3 Comments

To celebrate our readers, Little Red Reads is giving away a copy of one of our favorite books The Kissing Hand to those with a US mailing address…
The Kissing Hand
by Audrey Penn, Ruth E. Harper (illustrator), Nancy M. Leak (illustrator)
Paperback, 32 pages
Published June 25th 1993
by Child & Family Press

ISBN0878685855

Summary from Gooodreads: Chester Raccoon doesn’t want to go to school–he wants to stay home with his mother. She assures him that he’ll love school–with its promise of new friends, new toys, and new books. Even better, she has a special secret that’s been in the family for years–the Kissing Hand. This secret, she tells him, will make school seem as cozy as home. She takes her son’s hand, spreads his tiny fingers into a fan and kisses his palm–smack dab in the middle: “Chester felt his mother’s kiss rush from his hand, up his arm, and into his heart.” Whenever he feels lonely at school, all he has to do is press his hand to his cheek to feel the warmth of his mother’s kiss. Chester is so pleased with his Kissing Hand that he–in a genuinely touching moment–gives his mom a Kissing Hand, too, to comfort her when he is away. Audrey Penn’s The Kissing Hand, published by the Child Welfare League of America, is just the right book for any child taking that fledgling plunge into preschool–or for any youngster who is temporarily separated from home or loved ones. The rough but endearing raccoon illustrations are as satisfying and soothing for anxious children as the simple story. (Ages 5 and older) –Karin Snelson
