It's understandable that some children appear bored or distracted during sacrament meeting. Many young Latter-day Saints are probably unsure about the true meaning of the sacrament and why we attend. With this in mind, bestselling author John Bytheway has composed a delightful poem (inspired by a short poem by Walter H. Horne) to help Latter-day Saints young and old appreciate the ordinance of the sacrament. In particular, children will learn what they should be thinking about (and not be thinking about) during this sacred time as well as what the sacrament can do for all of us.

Beautifully illustrated by Nathan Pinnock, this thought-provoking story about a young boy and his grandpa is a gentle reminder about the importance of remembering the Lord Jesus Christ, especially during this special meeting meant for Him.

It's been twenty years since John Bytheway started publishing with Deseret Book Company. However, this is the first time that his name will appear on a children's picture book. For years, John has used a poem during fireside talks to help LDS families understand the importance of the sacrament. With full-color illustrations by Nathan Pinnock, The Sacrament will help children of all ages understand what they should be thinking about during this sacred ordinance. John shares the story of a by and his grandfather and the memory the grandfather shares with his grandson regarding the lesson he learned about the sacrament when he was a young boy.

Review

Sacrament meeting is such a tricky time when you have young children and as a mother I am always grateful for books that help make it easier. The Sacrament by John Bytheway explains the importance of remembering the Savior and the covenants we make at baptism in words and illustrations children will understand. The story of a young boy staying at his grandpa’s house who feels bored in the chapel while the bread and water comes around. Grandpa describes that he once felt the same way, but as he looked around, he noticed how many others were not paying attention.

There’s the boy with the gold star on his forehead and socks off that we find in both Grandpa’s ward and the present day, as well as fun, almost hidden silly things dispersed through out the pages. A garden gnome peeking out on grandpa’s front lawn and a grandma my kiddos were a bit scared of on the first page. But the tone changes from silly to serious as the boy begins to understand how different the congregation would be if Christ were there himself.

We loved The Sacrament! It’s fun to see John Bytheway breaking into children’s books and I am so thankful to have another well written book with explanations of the symbols of the sacrament to add to our quiet bag.

Book Summary

Luisa May, known to her family and friends as Lu, loves to play games with her grandma. When she’s bullied at school, Grandma has a special puzzle for Lu to help her see how valuable she is—no matter what others say, or how much doubt she feels within herself. Soon after, Grandma has to go to the hospital, and Lu finds out Grandma needs help recovering. Then it’s Lu’s turn to help Grandma see how valuable she is—no matter how much doubt she feels within herself. It’s a beautiful parallel for young and old alike, as each age learns from the other.

Written and illustrated with loving hands, this delightful children’s story offers a heartfelt message that unites and bonds generations. From the award-winning pen of Fay A. Klingler, I Am Strong! I Am Smart! provides to women of all ages a reminder of the tremendous gift of “girl power.”

What a delightful book written and illustrated with a light, humorous touch. The message is right in the title, I Am Strong! I Am Smart! One of the most protective factors in any child’s life is the self-perception that “I am capable, important, and powerful.” This book allows children to enter into this self-perception along with our heroine. A valuable, fun read, reinforcing key family values and strengths.
—Joe L. Freeman, Master of Divinity, LCSW

Priceless! The reader becomes immediately drawn into the relationship between grandmother and granddaughter. During the story, one sees the characters interact in a variety of settings, and through those interactions a firm foundation of love and trust is developed. Each has something to offer to the other socially and emotionally. Positive relationships between grandparents and grandchildren are proven to be essential. The author, Fay Klingler, helps one see that a grandparent can help a distraught tween overcome challenges faced at school by just being available to listen, then through encouragement, and finally by following up and not dismissing her granddaughter’s feelings. Then when the grandmother faces challenges of her own, Lu, the granddaughter, takes it upon herself to lift her grandmother in a way no other person could. This is a wonderful book for all ages, early elementary to the most experienced grandparent.

I have two books coming out this month—I Am Strong! I Am Smart! and a non-fiction book, We Are Strong! Mothers and Daughters Stand Together. Both of these books revolve around the influence one generation has on another—grandmothers/grandchildren, mothers/daughters.

I Am Strong! I Am Smart! for ages 8 to 12 is fully illustrated (Christian, national). A couple of my beta readers (non-professional critiquers) were in this age category, and oh, my goodness, they did such a marvelous job and were very entertaining to work with. The artwork was done by Briana Shawcroft. She did an excellent job and I had a lot of fun working with her on this project.

This book was the product of my wonderful mother’s example. As a child, my mother taught me 100 ways to play Solitaire and Double Solitaire. I’ve continued to learn much from her and from my children and grandchildren. In this book I wanted to show how, no matter our age, we not only can learn from each other, but we can build each other up and help through the crises that come our way.

To my delight, I Am Strong! I Am Smart! received 23 endorsements before it even went to press. I hope mothers, grandmothers, and granddaughters, in particular, will feel the “warmth” of this book and gain from it.

And so the hunt begins. Melanie, her best friend Sybil, and a haunting specter unravel clues that take them from crumbling graveyards, to the busy streets of the French Quarter, and then into murky swamps, all to find the prize.
