An inspiring portrait of an immigrant and the gift he gave his new home.

Persecuted as Jews, Izzy Baline and his family emigrated from Russia to New York, where he fell in love with his new country. He heard music everywhere and was full to bursting with his own. Izzy’s thump-two-three, ting-a-ling, whee tunes soon brought him acclaim as the sought-after songwriter Irving Berlin. He ignited the imaginations of fellow countrymen and women with his Broadway and Hollywood numbers, crafting tunes that have become classics we still sing today.

But when darker times came and the nation went to war, it was time for Irving to compose a new kind of song:

A boom-rah-rah song.

A big brass belter.

A loud heart-melter.

A song for America.

And so “God Bless America” was born, the heart swelling standard that Americans have returned to again and again after its 1918 composition.

This is the tale of how a former refugee gave America one of its most celebrated patriotic songs. With stirring, rhythmic text by Adah Nuchi and delightful, energetic art by Rob Polivka, readers will be ready to hum along to this exuberant picturebook.

So many of us are descendants of immigrants who fled their countries for various reasons and landed in New York to make their way in the American dream. Flipping the first few pages of God Bless America stirred feelings of remembrance and gratitude for me as I’ve studied the sights and places my third great grandparents experienced coming over from their homeland to the docks, markets and tenements of a new land. Busy, corded conditions, yet exciting and new. A land of opportunity and work. I loved the true to era illustrations which captured all Irving and other refugees would have seen in the city.

A hopeful children’s book which teaches young ones about the songs we know and love as well as their own roots. Irving endured hardship with grace, striking it out on his own to make a living as a young teen. He followed his natural talent and his dreams to rise to the top of the nation as an underdog. This is a story of grit and grace. We will be reading and relating God Bless America to our own early history as a family. What a wonderful story!

Pub. Date: June 5, 2018

Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Formats: Hardcover, eBook

Pages: 40

In the first stand-alone picture book from the creator of the bestselling Magnolia Says DON’T! books, a giraffe’s self-esteem is tested during a hilarious confrontation between unlikely look-alikes!

Everybody loves Leopold the giraffe. He inspires awe and wonder. His adoring fans gaze and cheer. Best of all, they feed him lots of deeeelicious snacks! But, one day, a shiny, bobble-headed new rival comes in and ruins everything…a giraffe-shaped balloon! Just how far will Leopold go to prove that he’s the hero of the zoo? Readers learn that actions speak far louder than looks in this laugh-out-loud face-off from Elise Parsley–the New York Times bestselling creator of If You Ever Want to Bring an Alligator to School, Don’t!

I can usually tell how much interest a book is going to generate as soon as it arrives in the mail at our home. Take it out of the package and set in on the shelves, then wait and see what happens. Both of our youngest children, picked it up immediately and asked me to read it to them. They smiled at the rick illustrations of a power struggle between a small boy and a giraffe at the zoo. Will the balloon imposter win over the real live animal when put to the popularity test?

Neck and Neck teaches about what is really important in winning over the hearts of a fan. Empathy, kindness and overcoming jealousy. It was easy to read it through twice in a row. This will become a fast favorite for your littles as they enjoy the vibrant illustrations and fun message.

Review

This series has been a favorite of our middle schooler! She loves the cover, the doodles between chapters and fun characters who come alive when ripped from a sticker sheet. Who wouldn’t adore a walking, talking cupcake?

As an adult reader, it brought me back to the 80’s days of stationary stores with rolls and rolls of puffy stickers with google eyes. The plot is fun, with a girl who cares deeply about her mother who is trying hard to save for their family. It is nostalgic and whimsical. With buried treasure, gemstones and the promises of a brighte future, we look forward to reading much more from Janet Tashjian.
